Clematis 'Josephine'

Clematis 'Josephine' ('Evijohill' PBR) was launched at the Chelsea Flower Show in May 1998.
A fascinating new double cultivar bought as an unflowered seedling from a market in Twickenham, London by Jo (Josephine) Hill in England.

That was in the early 1980's and once it flowered she tried for years to get the plant identified - and once shown to Clematis guru Raymond Evison, he declared it a new cultivar and introduced it via his wholesale Guernsey Clematis Nursery in 1998.

The flowers generally have eight outer tepals which are green to creamy green-pink/mauve in colour, the centre of the flower is then built up with layer after layer of tiny, thin, pointed tepals making a full rosette-like flower.

The tepals nearest to the outer tepals very often have a green central bar or green tips, the inner tepals being a pinkish mauve. The flowers are always fully double, the later summer flowers showing less green and becoming a more creamy pink mauve in colour.

A marvellous flower for flower arranging and a great plant for container culture or for the small garden. It will be best to plant it in part to full sun otherwise the beauty of its flowers and colour will not be achieved. If weird, green flowers are required for interesting floral arrangements then it can be planted on a shady north-east or north-west position. The most flowers will be produced in a full sun position. Neat trifoliate leaves.

Flowers early summer - early autumn (always double)

Height 2.5m (7ft) Zone 4-9. Available across the world it has sold more than 100,000 plants in the UK, Japan USA and Canada up to 2002.
