Chaenorhinum 'Pink Dream'Chaenorhinum origanifolium (syn. Linaria glareosum) 'Pink Dream' came to the UK via Michael Cole of Plant Growers Australia Pty. in 1998 and appeared in PLANTS Issue 15. Mike Tristram who was a columnist at the time said: "This plant was raised some years ago from seed of Chaenorhinum origanifolium originally imported from the UK by Terry Hatch of Joy Plants Nursery in New Zealand." "Michael kindly sent me some material which will be made available to the European trade. It is a dusky rather than a bright clear pink, it is definitely the pinkest I've yet seen in this species which has recently become popular as a patio and edging plant in the UK." "Also, another of the same species being launched by Farplants in their Plants for Patios range in 1999 is Chaenorhinum 'Honey', a seedling selected by me with a bushy habit and mauve-blue flowers much larger than typical for the species, honey scented, vigorous and long-flowering." (Plant Breeders Rights may be applied for within a year of first sales.) I have also selected (but not yet released) another one with large purple flowers and a vigorous trailing habit. (There is a 'Purple Dream' in Australia which Michael also kindly sent me and I have available here, but it has smaller flowers.) Why is this till recently scarcely-known species suddenly so popular? It's reasonably hardy, flowers very freely over a long period, and is very easy to mass-produce from cuttings."
