Buxus sempervirens 'Monrue'Buxus sempervirens 'Monrue' (Green Tower') makes a perfect hedge plant for tight spaces, as it grows moderately to fast in a columnar form to nine feet tall, one to two feet wide. The medium- to fine-textured foliage is dense enough to create a privacy hedge, and it will remain naturally narrow if allowed to grow unhindered. Its lustrous dark green leaves have a lighter underside and will not brown out in winter. 'Green Tower' can be a carefree evergreen hedge barrier, and it looks great as a single columnar specimen or in pairs to flank a gate or entry. It adapts well to shearing, and makes a good choice for topiary forms. One of Monrovia's own growers identified this as a sport of the Buxus sempervirens 'Graham Blandy' - the sport was almost glowing with a bright green color, and became even greener in the colder months. 'Green Tower' is widely adaptable in well-drained soils, preferring limestone soils with pH 6 or higher. Plant in full sun and follow a regular watering schedule during the first growing season to establish a deep, extensive root system. Feed with a general-purpose fertilizer before new growth begins in spring.
