Echinacea 'Magnus'During 2002/3 The Royal Horticultural Society in England trialled a range of Echinacea grown from seed. Of the 19 species and varieties entered only 'Magnus' was judged to reach the very high standard required for an AGM - Award of Garden Merit. The seed for 'Magnus' was supplied by Jelitto Perennial Seeds. The trial was inspected during July / August 2003 by members of the Floral Trials Sub-committee, who recommended the award to Magnus based on the following criteria: Flower shape and uniformity of shape; flower colour; vigour (strength of growth); and habit (general form and appearance of the plant overall). The Trials Committee remarked that only one cultivar was sufficiently uniform to be recommended for an award. The breeder, Magnus Nilsson from Puarp in Sweden, who was 97 years old in November 2003, is justifiably enormously proud of this accolade, which follows that in 1998 when this variety was awarded the title of "Flower of the Year" by horticultural experts in the USA and Sweden PHOTO COPYRIGHT © If yopu are the copyright owner please let me know Posted: 3 May 2004 Last modified: 13 May 2007 TO ORDER THIS PHOTOGRAPH AS A HIGH RESOLUTION DIGITAL FILE SUITABLE FOR REPRODUCTION PLEASE e-mail: dirk@plants-magazine.com |
